Homeschool Mother’s Journal – April 1st

2 April 2011

In my life this week…

Our central Texas weather took a dip in the early part of the week after 90 last Saturday.  It was a relief to have some clouds and revisit the 70’s.  Once we hit 90, we don’t go back down in temperature too much.  This means we’re in for an early summer.  I just hope I don’t have to start running my air conditioner yet!

In our homeschool this week…

We began our study of Exodus by reviewing how the Israelites got into Egypt and how Moses was born.  It was fun to consider what Moses’ life must have been like during his first 40 years in Pharoah’s palace.  The Bible doesn’t give much detail so this is a fun place for divine imagination.  What was Moses’ childhood like and how did he learn about his true Hebrew heritage?  How did he know he was called by God to be a deliverer?  Interesting…..

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We’ve been busy building our garden and getting some new little chicks to add to our flock, so we’ve been visiting the nursery a lot.  We bought and planted the majority of our plants last weekend.  We’re attempting to grow mostly veggies;  peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, basil etc., but we’ve also got some strawberry plants, and blueberry and blackberry bushes.  In between the veggies, we’ve planted some flowers to keep bugs out and make it look pretty.  Can’t wait to see what kind of output we get!

My favorite thing this week was…

My little boy turned 8 this week.  It’s hard to believe that my youngest child is now eight years old.  He is such a joyful, energetic kid.  Even when he’s mad, he can’t hold on to his pouty face and has to start laughing.  He really makes me smile!  Celebrating his birthday and seeing his delight in his new toys was a blast!

What’s working/not working for us…

Our daily routine is requiring some changes.  For the past several months, I’ve been content to do chores and other non-essentials in the morning and start school around 10:30 or 11.  This works for us as far as time is concerned, but I found that leaving the kids too much time to play in the morning has caused our school time to be very distracted and unsuccessful.  This week we reinstituted a 9-9:30 start to our school day and even though there were groans on Monday, the week went much better.   Everyone enjoyed finishing early in the afternoon, especially me!

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

I’m wondering what time other Mom’s start their school day?  Do you allow your kids to play before starting school?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

The birthday boy…..

A budding skateboarder!

Until next week ~

Laura
